The important line is between the first two and the last two. BB and pellet guns fire hard projectiles at velocities that can cause serious injury. Airsoft and gel blasters are designed to be shot at people wearing protective equipment; BB and pellet guns emphatically are not.

Nearly everyone believes it does. It doesn’t.
The name comes from BB-size lead shotgun shot, nominally around .180 inches. Around 1900, Daisy standardized its air rifle bore to .175 inches and marketed the ammunition as “air rifle shot” — but the BB designation had already caught on and never left.
Modern steel BBs measure roughly .171 to .173 inches, deliberately undersized. That detail matters more than it sounds, and we’ll come back to it.
BB vs Pellet: The Real Difference
This is the question the whole category turns on, and the answer is more interesting than “pellets are better.”
Shape and Barrel
A BB is a steel sphere. Nothing about its shape stabilizes it in flight beyond its own momentum.
A pellet is a diabolo — a narrow waist with a flared skirt, shaped a bit like a badminton shuttlecock. That shape does two things: the forward weight bias keeps the nose pointed into the airflow, and the skirt creates drag that stabilizes the tail.
Dedicated BB guns usually use smoothbore barrels; precision pellet guns typically use rifled ones. But the categories overlap — dual-ammo guns exist, and a rifled barrel doesn’t automatically mean better BB performance.
Why BBs Are Deliberately Undersized
Here’s the detail that explains everything else.
Steel BBs are slightly smaller than the bore — around .171 to .173 in a .177 barrel. That’s intentional: undersized BBs feed reliably through magazines and don’t create excessive friction against steel.
But it means the BB doesn’t seal the bore, so propellant gas escapes around it, and it doesn’t meaningfully engage rifling even in a rifled barrel. A properly sized pellet seals the bore, and in a rifled pellet gun it also engages the rifling and spins.
That one design choice is why BB guns feed fast and shoot cheap, and why pellet guns shoot accurately.

The Ricochet Point Deserves Emphasis
Steel BBs bounce. They don’t deform meaningfully on impact with hard surfaces, which means they come back — off metal, off concrete, off anything that isn’t a proper backstop.

Which Should You Buy?
Match the Type to the Job
Plinking cans in the backyard? BB gun. Cheap, fast, and accuracy beyond 30 feet isn’t the point.
Practicing trigger control and grip? BB gun, specifically a licensed replica of a pistol you own.
Target shooting for accuracy? Pellet, and a rifled barrel.

Power Systems
How the gun generates pressure affects everything about how it shoots.
Spring piston uses a cocked spring driving a piston. No consumables, consistent in cold weather, single-shot. Break-barrel rifles are the classic example. The tradeoff is a distinctive recoil pulse that takes getting used to.
CO2 uses a 12-gram cartridge. Semi-auto or full-auto operation, blowback slides on some replica pistols, very convenient. Two tradeoffs: performance drops in cold weather as CO2 pressure falls, and you’re buying cartridges.
Multi-pump pneumatic lets you pump the gun by hand — usually three to ten strokes — and the number of pumps determines velocity. No consumables, adjustable power, but it’s slow between shots.
PCP uses a pre-charged air reservoir filled from a tank or pump. The most powerful and consistent option, and the most expensive to get into.
CO2 pressure is temperature dependent. A pistol that shoots 400 FPS in summer will shoot noticeably slower on a cold morning, and in genuinely cold conditions it may cycle unreliably.
If you shoot year-round in a cold climate, spring piston or multi-pump avoids that problem entirely.
Replicas and Training Use
Replica air pistols have a legitimate training use beyond novelty.
Licensed replicas — officially authorized copies of Glock, Sig, Smith & Wesson, Beretta and others — replicate the appearance, dimensions, and external layout of the real pistol.
This is the shopping mistake to avoid. Some licensed replicas include blowback slides that cycle when fired and drop-free magazines that load like the real thing. Others don’t.

What a Replica Is Actually Good For
Trigger time at a fraction of the cost. Centerfire ammunition is expensive and range time takes a trip. BBs cost almost nothing, and a replica pistol works in a garage with a proper trap.
Grip, presentation, and sight alignment. The fundamentals that don’t require live fire are exactly what a matched replica reinforces. Introducing a new shooter. Someone nervous about recoil and muzzle blast can learn stance, grip, and trigger press without either.

These Aren’t Toys

BB and pellet guns can cause permanent eye injury, penetrating wounds, and in documented cases death. The velocities involved are entirely sufficient to break skin, penetrate an eye, and damage internal structures.
Treat every airgun with the same handling rules you’d apply to a firearm: muzzle discipline, finger off the trigger, know your target and what’s behind it, and assume it’s loaded.
Three hazards specific to this category:

Federal law generally doesn’t treat airguns as firearms, since the federal definition centers on expelling a projectile by explosive action. That means no federal background check for most airguns.
New Jersey is the example worth knowing: state law treats qualifying air guns as firearms, even though federal law generally does not. The state’s own wildlife materials tell users exactly that.
Get that distinction wrong and conduct that would be lawful elsewhere can potentially create serious firearms-law problems under New Jersey law. Other states set their own thresholds by velocity or caliber.
Local rules add another layer. Many cities prohibit discharge within limits entirely regardless of what the gun is. Some states regulate sales to minors. And several jurisdictions have specific rules about realistic imitation firearms — markings, transport, and public display.
